Terms of Service

Last Updated: March 2026

1. Introduction

Welcome to MaskIt. By accessing or using the MaskIt application, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, you may not use the service.

2. Service Description

MaskIt is a local-first PII (Personally Identifiable Information) redaction tool. The core redaction engine — including regex pattern matching, NLP inference, and file parsing — operates entirely within your browser environment. MaskIt supports text input and file uploads for the following supported file types: TXT, LOG, CSV, JSON, SQL, and PDF. The product includes batch multi-file upload: you may select and process multiple files in one session; each file is handled locally in your browser in sequence, subject to your plan’s quotas.

3. Data Processing and Privacy

3.1 Local Processing

All content you submit for redaction (text or files) is processed exclusively in your browser. This includes NLP model inference, which runs in a dedicated Web Worker thread. No document content is transmitted to MaskIt servers during the redaction workflow.

3.2 NLP Model

MaskIt uses a third-party open-source NLP model (Xenova/bert-base-multilingual-cased-ner-hrl) hosted on Hugging Face. The model binary is downloaded to your browser on first use and cached locally. After download, inference runs entirely offline. MaskIt does not control the availability or content of the model hosted by Hugging Face.

3.3 Server-Side Data

MaskIt servers store only non-sensitive operational metadata: account profiles, workspace configuration, subscription status, usage counters, detection policy presets, and job history metadata (file names, entity counts, processing times, category summaries). See our Privacy Policy for full details.

4. Batch Processing

When you use batch upload and process multiple files, each file is processed sequentially in your browser. Quota limits (scans, characters, file size) are enforced cumulatively across the batch. If a limit is reached mid-batch, remaining files are skipped.

5. User Responsibilities

  • You are responsible for ensuring you have the legal right to process the data you submit to MaskIt.
  • MaskIt provides automated detection and redaction tools, but no automated system is 100% accurate. You should review redacted outputs — especially for sensitive or regulated data — before sharing or publishing.
  • MaskIt is not liable for residual sensitive information in redacted outputs.
  • You are responsible for the content of file names, which may be stored as part of job history metadata.

6. Human Review Feature

The Review Queue allows you to approve, reject, defer, or re-categorize individual PII detections. Review decisions are logged for audit purposes. Review data (decisions, timestamps, category overrides) is stored in browser memory only and is not persisted to MaskIt servers unless you explicitly export an audit bundle.

7. Subscription and Billing

If you subscribe to a paid plan, you agree to pay all applicable fees as displayed at the time of purchase. Fees are non-refundable except as required by applicable law. Subscriptions are managed through Stripe. You may open the Stripe Customer Billing Portal from the MaskIt dashboard for self-service subscription management (e.g., update payment method, view invoices, or cancel), subject to Stripe’s own terms and availability.

If a subscription enters a past_due state (e.g., failed payment), MaskIt may apply a grace period during which paid entitlements may continue while Stripe retries collection; after that period or if collection fails, access may be restricted consistent with your plan status. If a subscription is canceled or not renewed, your workspace may be downgraded to a free or limited tier and premium features or higher quotas may cease, as reflected in the product at that time.

8. Intellectual Property

MaskIt and its original content, features, and functionality are owned by MaskIt and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. The open-source NLP model used by MaskIt is subject to its own license terms.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

The service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. MaskIt does not warrant that detection results will be complete, accurate, or error-free.

10. Limitation of Liability

In no event shall MaskIt be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or in connection with your use of the service, including but not limited to data exposure resulting from incomplete redaction.

11. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. Material changes will be posted with an updated "Last Updated" date. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
